RE: 2008 Ford F250SD V10 4x4

I have an '08 CC BB 4x4 with 4.30 gears. Empty at 70-75 on the two lanes nets 11-12 mpg. Towing 5er (about 12k) gets me from 4.5 bucking nasty wind to 7 on down hill runs. Average about 6 mpg with trailer. I wouldn't be unhappy with the milage if it pulled as hard as it sucks fuel.

RE: Trading down??

The only way to come out in good shape is to sell your 5er outright. If you try to trade you will take it in the shorts, unless the dealer realy wants your trade. That doesn't seem too likely right now.

RE: Vehicle Prices

You can try to blame the manufactures, but they were building what the public was buying. You, me and our neighbors were happily buying SUVs and pickups. Looked good in front of the new house they couldn't afford either. If the lots were filled with econo boxes and mini vans business would have been bad. Back to the original posters point, what everyone seems to be missing is the dealers risk. That new Sub will not go down in value that much. It will just be a matter of time until someone buys it. The rig you are wanting to trade may loose thousands of dollars of value before it sells. He's better off taking the risk on the new one.

RE: I pick up my new truck today !!

Jim, have you towed with your '08 yet. I've got a F250 like yours that has no power until 2500 rpm. Just a short test tow with the 5er but not too happy so far. Yes I have a it tows like a dream. I am towing a 12000lb northshore 5th wheel. I can almost whisper to my wife while driving down the highway. The built in brake controller works real nice too. Gas mileage is 12mpg highway towing at 53mph. As for power, It takes off from the start a little slower than my 250 did but I waas only towing a 8000lb 5ver then. I am very happy with it and would highly reommend the ford F350 V10 and 430 gears. Enjoy

It seldom makes 12 mpg empty, but that's at 70-75 mph. Towed a small aluminum trailer wit 2 dirt bikes and a quad, less than 2000 lb. At 65 mph on flat in OD would not accelerate without a downshift. It was at dealers yesterday. They said it was normal.

RE: Could be a silly question but I'm baffled

It can definately be from rocks bouncing off the trailer. In this area lots of ranchers have goose neck stock trailers. The tailgate becomes the most rock chipped part of the pickup because of the trailers.

RE: 5er "fishtailing" behind new pickup

Go back to a GM. LOL That took longer than I thought it would.

RE: 5er "fishtailing" behind new pickup

Thanks for the input. I think that it is probably a combination of things. Tire presure and the fact that it was much lighter than normal. No food, water, etc. The trailer has always pulled good before, except for some forward/back jerking. We almost always have a 8.5 x 10 ft trailer on behind with quads or bikes on it. Had a good test last summer when a 18 wheeler pulled out in front of us. My first reaction was "OH $HIFT". Before panic could even really start to set in, I knew it was gonna be OK. I guess a good brake controller that is properly set up is worth having.

RE: 5er "fishtailing" behind new pickup

Trailer does sit about 2.5" higher in front when measured from next to jacks in front and near rear bumper in back. King pin is a couple inches in front of rear axle. It was just a test run, so no water on board. Fresh water tank is in front. Gray and black in rear. On a trip that weight is in front going and behind axles coming home. I have always been able to tell the difference, but in the past it has been chucking, not fishtailing. Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I'll air up the rear tires next time and see what I have.

5er "fishtailing" behind new pickup

I have been pulling my Jayco behind a Chev with a goose neck adaptor for 6 years. Just got a new Ford with a Curt 20k slider. Overall the new setup pulls the trailer great, but sometomes it fishtails a little bit. Can't really feel it in the pickup, but it is very noticable in the mirrors. The trailer is moving isde to side. The only thing I didn't do before the test run was to air up the rear tires on the pickup. They were at about 55 psi. Is there anything else I should look for to fond the problem?

RE: 55 mph National speed limit

This oil "crisis" has nothing to do with supply or demand. There's plenty of oil for sale. As a poster mentioned, there's a worldwide demand for oil, so we can save all we want and the price isn't going down. A poster mentioned the speculators and the weak dollar. This is the real issue as to why the cost of a gallon of gas has spiked so high. That, and the gas companies charge $4.399 for diesel because they can and I'll pay it to get to work and back every day. You are leaving out the major factor in the run up in price of gasoline, and especially diesel, and that is they enormous demand for fuel in the emerging economies of China and India. All those jobs we have sent overseas has caused exponenntial economic growth and that all means a tremendous thirst for oil. BigT is exactly right about where the biggest increase in demand is. If you want to curb demand close Wally World. That would stem the flow of our $$$ to China and they wouldn't need the oil.

RE: Lube for scissor jacks?

Clean threads with a wire brush and lube once or twice a year with Slip Plate. It's a dry lube that will not atract dirt.

RE: Which Michelin Tires

I've ran the M&S on many rigs for years. They work very well on slick stuff like snow pack and ice. Not the best but above average. They are not great in deeper snow. Not enough lug to really bite well. I'm kind of looking for something different now. The last couple of sets haven't had that good old Michelin premium feel. Used to be that I could tell if the rig had them on. Now they feel more like other tires I have ran. Hard to explain but that's how I feel.

RE: 2008 2500HD 3:73 or 4:10

Go with 4.10 for sure. I drove a new 6.0 when I was looking last summer. It had the 3.73 and would not hold 6th gear into a light MT wind at 70 mph. When you put your foot down and the Rs came up it would scoot though.

RE: Question on Reese signature series

Thanks for the info guys. The pics were a big help Campingman. Sometimes it hard to visualize something without seeing it in its spot. Much better than a pic of just the hitch. Are there any problems with the hitch? Likes/dislikes?

Question on Reese signature series

I'm about to get a new manual slider hitch. Looking at the Signature or similar for the smooth bed. Is it easy or even possible to use the landing gear of the trailer to lift the hitch off the pickup? Will the pins that drop in the holes bind? With the Signature series would the bed mat need to be cut out around the whole base of the hitch? I appreciate any info on this or other manual slider hithes.

RE: Air pressure sensors on 07 Duramax

I have the same issue with a new Ford. It seems that the low limit is about 55 psi. That would be OK if I was always loaded but a load/inflation chart for my stock tires shows that 40 psi will carry the rig empty just fine. Since I drive alot of gravel I have always ran about 50-55 psi front and 40-45 rear when empty. Rides better and is much easier on the rig. I have read other places that the dealer can't change the limit setting as it's a "safety" feature. If it could be set to let me know at 30 psi it would let me know that I really do have a problem. The way it is it's just Big Brother looking out for use stupid peons.

RE: 1997 Jayco Eagle 285-Swaying Problems

I have the same trailer with the same setup. While it's not as bad as you descibe it does slow you down in the wind. You are right in the fact that it is the worst coming home with the water moved to the back tanks. I believe that 16" tires would help, but you won't have as much lift as you do with the axle flip. Some things that have helped mine are Max air pressure in trailer and rear pickup tires. As you have done, try to load heavy stuff in front. Things that I have been told will help, but haven't tried. Shocks on trailer axles. Cross bracing between the dropped spring hangers that Jayco uses. What seems odd to me is that when we pull a 8.5x10 trailer with quads and bikes on behind the 5er, there is little to no difference in the sway. That tells me that the pin weight may not be all of the problem. On smooth roads you can't tell that you are pulling anything. Rough roads or wind will let you know quick though.

RE: Manual slider advice

We go into off road camp sites that we have to drop off tyhe road to get into. Much like turning off the road into a gradual side ditch. When we are heading back onto the road and the pickup is more or less on the level the 5er is just coming out of the ditch so to speak. At this time the rear corners of the pickup bed are very close to the underside of the trailer. By being able to slide the hitch back it will give a little more room in these situations as there will be less bed behind the hitch. Did I explain that well??
